How to Prepare for Rehab: A Step-by-Step Guide

Prepare for rehab by packing essentials and following centre guidelines.
Mentally prepare by visualising goals and leaning into the process.

Choosing to enter rehabilitation is one of the most courageous decisions you can make. It signifies a commitment to recovery, a step towards reclaiming your life and the start of a hopeful, healing journey. Whether you’re getting ready for your first day at Broadway Lodge or another rehab centre, proper preparation can help support a smooth transition into treatment.

This guide provides practical steps on what to pack, what to expect and how to mentally prepare for your upcoming stay.

Nobody chooses addiction – it is often the only thing they have to cope when they feel all other choices have been taken from them. Seeing them choose to live and give back to the world is the most beautiful process and I am honoured to be a part of it. We don’t just stick a plaster over a gaping wound, we focus on hope, responsibility and self-worth.”

– Kate, Registered Mental Health Nurse at Broadway Lodge

What to pack for rehab

Packing for rehab is about ensuring you have everything you need while adhering to the guidelines. Here’s a list of essentials to bring with you (please check the specific requirements of your chosen centre, as this may vary):

Must-have items

  • Money & bank card: Bring enough money to last for a week for buying basic essentials.
  • Medication: If you’re on prescribed medication, ensure you bring enough for four weeks or a doctor’s prescription.
  • Clothing: Comfortable and casual is key. Think practical items like jogging bottoms, t-shirts, trainers and a jacket. Include pyjamas, a dressing gown and slippers for relaxation time.
  • Toiletries: Basic items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and a hairdryer. Make sure toiletries are alcohol-free.
  • Towels
  • Suncream

Optional extras

  • Mobile phone (if permitted)
  • Cigarettes or vapes
  • Stationery and a few stamps to write letters
  • A book or two for spare moments
  • MP3 players or smart speakers to listen to music
  • Musical instruments (at your own risk)

What to leave behind

For safety and practicality, most centres do not allow the following items:

  • Cameras
  • Valuables
  • Excessive or inappropriate clothing
  • Food or snacks
  • Sharp objects (e.g., penknives)
  • Mouthwash or toiletries containing alcohol

When you arrive, expect all of your belongings to be checked as part of the admission process. You’ll be provided with a small locker to keep your personal items safe.

What to expect when you first arrive

Understanding what happens during rehabilitation can make the experience feel less intimidating. At Broadway Lodge, for example, your first stop will be with the medical team in the Gordon Beard Unit. This specialised area offers 24/7 medical support in a smaller setting initially, ensuring your wellbeing is prioritised. Once ready, you’ll move into the larger main house to begin the comprehensive recovery programme with up to 31 peers.

A typical day might include a mix of individual and group therapy, relaxation exercises such as mindfulness or auricular acupuncture, educational workshops and some downtime to socialise, play games or enjoy a book. Meals are provided and these moments allow plenty of time to bond with peers who are walking the same path.

You’ll also have access to a dedicated counsellor for one-on-one sessions and 24/7 support from staff members. At Broadway Lodge, we create a compassionate, supportive and caring environment where trust and guidance help ease you through the recovery process.

How to mentally prepare for rehab

Preparing mentally for rehabilitation is as important as having the right items in your bag. It’s natural to feel nervous or unsure, but taking these steps can help ease your transition:

1. Acknowledge your strength

Entering rehab isn’t a sign of weakness but one of remarkable strength. Remind yourself that seeking help is courageous and a gift you’re giving yourself to build a better future.

2. Educate yourself

Understanding what lies ahead can alleviate some of your fears. Reach out to staff, read about the rehab programme or speak to someone who has been through a similar experience.

3. Be open to support

Be willing to invest in the process. Lean into therapy sessions and activities and remain open to support from peers and staff who will stand with you during this time.

4. Reflect on your goals

Spend some time thinking about what you hope to achieve through rehabilitation. Setting simple, clear goals can help you stay focused on the positives.

5. Prepare your loved ones

Make sure family or close friends are aware of your plan and informed of boundaries, such as limited communication, while you are in treatment.

6. Visualise a fresh start

Rehab is the first chapter of a new story. Visualising what life might look like or even just feeling better in yourself with hope for the future post-recovery can motivate and sustain you during more challenging days.

The start of something new

Starting rehab marks the beginning of a life-changing transformation. From packing your essentials to emotionally preparing, each step is part of carving your path to better health, stability and happiness.

At Broadway Lodge, our priority is creating a nurturing, non-judgmental environment where you can feel supported every step of the way. If you’re ready to take action and begin this brave new chapter, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Remember, no matter how daunting it feels, you’re not alone. One of the benefits of residential rehabilitation is the identification you feel from being amongst people with addiction who understand.
