What is Mephedrone?

Mephedrone, also known as “Meow Meow” or “MCAT,” is a synthetic stimulant drug that belongs to the cathinone family. It is often sold as a white powder or in tablet form and is typically snorted, swallowed or injected. Mephedrone produces effects similar to other stimulants like cocaine and MDMA, including increased energy, euphoria and heightened sociability.

While mephedrone may initially seem appealing due to its stimulating effects, it is highly addictive and can have serious physical and mental health consequences. Regular use can quickly lead to dependency, with users needing higher doses to achieve the same effects.

Is Mephedrone addictive?

Yes, mephedrone is highly addictive. Its stimulating effects on the brain’s reward system can create a powerful psychological dependency, while the physical cravings make it difficult to stop using. Many individuals find themselves caught in a cycle of intense highs, crashes and cravings, which can lead to severe health, social and emotional consequences. At Broadway Lodge, we specialise in helping individuals break free from mephedrone addiction with tailored treatment and compassionate care.

The effects of Mephedrone

Mephedrone is known for its stimulating and euphoric effects, but these come with significant risks.

The short-term effects of mephedrone include:

  • Increased energy and alertness.
  • Euphoria and heightened sociability.
  • Reduced inhibitions.

However, the harmful effects of mephedrone can include:

  • Anxiety, paranoia and agitation.
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Insomnia and exhaustion during withdrawal.
  • Risk of overdose, especially when combined with other substances.
  • Long-term mental health issues, including depression and memory problems.

Mephedrone and Chemsex

Mephedrone is commonly associated with chemsex – the use of drugs to enhance and prolong sexual activity. It is often used in this context for its ability to increase energy, lower inhibitions and heighten sexual arousal. However, its use in chemsex carries significant risks.

The combination of mephedrone and sexual activity can lead to:

  • Risky sexual behaviours, increasing the likelihood of contracting STIs, HIV and other infections.
  • Emotional and psychological distress, including feelings of shame, guilt and isolation.
  • A heightened risk of overdose due to prolonged use and mixing with other substances.
  • A dual addiction to both the drug and the behaviours associated with chemsex.

At Broadway Lodge, we understand the unique challenges of mephedrone addiction in the context of chemsex. Our tailored treatment programmes address both the physical and emotional aspects of this complex addiction, helping you to heal and move forward.

The risks of Mephedrone addiction

Mephedrone addiction can have a profound impact on every aspect of your life. The risks include:

  • Physical Health Risks: Heart problems, high blood pressure, weight loss and damage to the nervous system.
  • Mental Health Impact: Anxiety, depression, paranoia and psychosis.
  • Social Consequences: Strained relationships, financial difficulties and isolation.
  • Addiction Cycle: A pattern of intense cravings, binges and crashes that can be difficult to break without professional help.
