What are GHB and GBL?

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) and GBL (gamma-butyrolactone) are closely related substances that act as central nervous system depressants. GHB is often referred to as “G” or “Liquid Ecstasy” and is typically consumed as a clear liquid or powder. GBL is a chemical precursor to GHB, meaning it converts to GHB in the body after ingestion. Both substances are commonly used recreationally for their euphoric and sedative effects.

While GHB and GBL may initially seem appealing due to their relaxing and disinhibiting effects, they are highly addictive and can have serious physical and mental health consequences. Regular use can quickly lead to dependency, with users needing higher doses to achieve the same effects

Is GHB/GBL addictive?

Yes, GHB and GBL are highly addictive. Their effects on the brain’s reward system can create a powerful psychological dependency, while the physical withdrawal symptoms make it difficult to stop using. Many individuals find themselves caught in a cycle of cravings, frequent dosing and severe withdrawal symptoms, which can lead to significant health, social and emotional consequences. At Broadway Lodge, we specialise in helping individuals break free from GHB/GBL addiction with tailored treatment and compassionate care.

The effects of GHB/GBL

GHB and GBL are known for their sedative and euphoric effects, but these come with significant risks.

The short-term effects of GHB/GBL include:

  • Euphoria and relaxation.
  • Lowered inhibitions.
  • Increased sexual arousal.

However, the harmful effects of GHB/GBL can include:

  • Memory lapses and confusion.
  • Drowsiness and clumsiness.
  • Agitation and tremors.
  • Risk of overdose, which can lead to unconsciousness or “G sleep”.
  • Dangerous interactions with alcohol or other drugs.
  • Severe withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, insomnia and seizures.

GHB/GBL and Chemsex

GHB and GBL are commonly associated with chemsex – the use of drugs to enhance and prolong sexual activity. They are often used in this context for their ability to relax the body, lower inhibitions and increase sexual pleasure. However, their use in chemsex carries significant risks.

The combination of GHB/GBL and sexual activity can lead to:

  • Risky sexual behaviours, increasing the likelihood of contracting STIs, HIV and other infections.
  • Emotional and psychological distress, including feelings of shame, guilt and isolation.
  • A heightened risk of overdose due to prolonged use and mixing with other substances.
  • A dual addiction to both the drug and the behaviours associated with chemsex.

At Broadway Lodge, we understand the unique challenges of GHB/GBL addiction in the context of chemsex. Our tailored treatment programmes address both the physical and emotional aspects of this complex addiction, helping you to heal and move forward.

The risks of GHB/GBL addiction

GHB/GBL addiction can have a profound impact on every aspect of your life. The risks include:

  • Physical Health Risks: Overdose, seizures, respiratory depression and damage to the nervous system.
  • Mental Health Impact: Anxiety, depression, paranoia and memory problems.
  • Social Consequences: Strained relationships, financial difficulties and isolation.
  • Addiction Cycle: A pattern of frequent dosing, cravings and severe withdrawal symptoms that can be difficult to break without professional help.
