It’s no secret here that our housekeeping team (Julie, Emma and Mandy), and chef Caroline are very talented bakers and cake creators! Every now and again they organise a bake sale, staying up late into the night to make a selection of cupcakes, cheesecakes, layer cakes, rocky road and savoury light bites (and much more!), ready to offer to patients and staff the next day in exchange for donations.
As a charity, the bake sales are held to raise donations for Broadway Lodge. But this month, in light of all the devastating events and destruction in the Ukraine, all money raised would be donated to the DEC’s (Disasters Emergency Committee) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and we are delighted to have raised £275 this week to support this appeal.
The DEC bring together 15 UK charities who are experts in humanitarian aid and specialise in different areas of disaster response. They include Save The Children, British Red Cross and ActionAid. The money is used to supply and distribute essentials such as food, water, clothes, blankets, hygiene products, medicines and medical equipment to refugees and displaced citizens.
The DEC state:
“DEC charities are in Ukraine and neighbouring countries meeting the needs of all refugees and displaced people:
- £30 could provide essential hygiene supplies for three people for one month
- £50 could provide blankets for four families
- £100 could provide emergency food for two families for one month”
A huge thank you to Julie, Emma, Mandy and Caroline who worked incredibly hard to offer such an array of homemade, mouth-watering treats and for the effort that went into the decorations too. It was another spectacular bake sale enjoyed by everyone and we hope that the money will go a some way to directly help people who have been affected by the horrifying war.
